Effect of Composted Rice-hull on Physico-chemical Properties of Growing Media and Growth of Petunia hybrida

Abstract
The objectives of this research were to determine the physico-chemical properties of growing media and its effect on plant growth of petunia (Petunia hybrids Vilm.) when composted rice-hull be used as media component with various mixing ratio. Seeds of two petunia cultivars (Rose Champion and Falcon White) were sown on Apr. 30, 1995 and transplanted to 9 §¸ plastic pots containing root media amended with 0 to 75% composted rice hull on Apr. 20. Then, physicochemical properties of media and the growth characteristics were measured. Number of leaves, plant height, plant diameter, leaf area and fresh weight of petunia grown in the root media amended with 30 to 60% composted rice hull were higher than those grown in the media amended with 0, 15, or 75% of composted rice-hull. The amount of exchangeable cations increased and pH decreased as the content of rice hull was increased. Bulk density decreased and water content increased as the rate of composted rice-hull increased. Upper part of pots had higher bulk density and less water content than lower part of pots.
